Multi-Platform Insurance App using PhoneGap

Project Overview

QBurst developed mobile applications for a technology company that provides innovative solutions to various industries. Jarus Technologies, our client, was planning to distribute these applications to many insurance companies. Before we actually developed the applications using Android SDK, we demonstrated our PhoneGap capability by developing the customer application using PhoneGap and jQuery Mobile framework. The application worked on multiple platforms including iPhone, Android, Blackberry and Windows mobiles.

Our Solution

QBurst developed mobile applications for customers and agents of Jarus Technologies in the insurance industry. Customers use this application to get quotes on insurance schemes and to submit FNOL (First Notice of Loss). Agents, on the other hand, use the application to manage the insurance details of their clients. The application works offline and communicates with an external database using web services.

Customers

QBurst developed mobile applications for customers and agents of Jarus Technologies in the insurance industry. Customers use this application to get quotes on insurance schemes and to submit FNOL (First Notice of Loss). Agents, on the other hand, use the application to manage the insurance details of their clients. The application works offline and communicates with an external database using web services.

Customers can register and login to the application to get quotes and submit claims. These are the two main functionalities that the application has for customers. Request for quote can be made on three types of insurances - automobile, home and life. The application obtains information from the customer before providing a quote. For home insurances, the application gets information on property and additional coverage to calculate premium. For automobile insurances, the user will be prompted to enter details of the vehicle, driver and additional data related to coverage.

Customers can submit FNOLs through the application. FNOL is an initial notice of claim or incident resulting in loss of an insured product. It is a crucial element of insurance coverage. During the loss or damage of an insured product, the customer can login, collect important evidences in the form of photos, audio recordings, etc. and make claims to the insurance company through the application. The application even supports offline FNOL submission. This is helpful if the insured product gets lost or damaged in a region with no network coverage.

Other features for customers include looking for roadside help, searching for insurance agencies and making policy inquiries. The application displays nearest repair shops and towing vendors in maps. Customers will also get directions to reach insurance agency offices. They can also make mobile payments through the application.

Agents

Agents are middlemen who represent and work for the customers of insurance company. An agent may work for many insurers (clients). When an agent logs into the application, insurance policies of the clients can be viewed, searched, edited and managed. Customer search is the key functionality that the application has to offer for agents. All agent actions are role based. This means that agents will have access to the details of only those clients who have given permission. In addition to this, agents can view various forms, reports and documents.

Development

QBurst developed Jarus Mobile (for customer self-service) application for multiple platforms using PhoneGap and jQuery Mobile framework. The application was developed for iPhone, Android, Blackberry and Windows mobiles. jQuery Mobile uses HTML5 to design the user interface. Phonegap displays the HTML5 coded screen in phone webview for different platforms. The APIs connect to the phone's internal features that are different for the different platforms.

SQLite is used to store offline data. The main database is however MySQL and is managed by Jarus Technologies. The application accesses MySQL database through web services and obtains data to display in the application. Online payments and reporting are performed in a similar way through web services. Location Services is used to locate nearby roadside assistance to the user’s current location.
